Video Tape

The video tape is as a device used in recording movies and television shows. When digital films were still years in the future, the video tape is widely used to play and watch films, TV shows, concerts and recorded clips.

Types of video tape

The video tape itself has many kinds. To start with, video tapes differ in the running time and speed. Taking speed in consideration, the video tape can be categorised into three types: Standard Play (SP), Long Play (LP) and Extended Play (EP). SP is the most commonly used video tape in terms of speed; example of use of this tape is through VHS rental tapes. Because the LP is difficult to duplicate, it is not used as often. EP, as its name suggests, can record more footage. It is used by those who are looking to record more while helping the save some money in the long run.

If you are on the market for video tapes, you must know that there are different kinds of video tape formats as well. The smallest and most efficient is the Mini DV. This video tape format is observed to have no quality loss during transfer of data. Other video tape formats include the Digital 8, Hi-8 and 8MM. The Digital 8 is reported to be better than the Hi-8 and 8MM. The Digital 8's camcorders can still play Hi-8 and 8MM video tapes. The popular VHS and Betamax video tapes are also types of video tape formats. Though once popular, the two formats became obsolete due to the production of newer, faster and more efficient video tape formats in the likes of the Mini DV.

Uses of video tape

The video tape has served the film industry well as a means of storage. Though the search for newer formats have rendered older formats obsolete, the video tape has remained in existence today. Young filmmakers still use the video tape in shoot footages for their film projects.

The video tape is used to store not just movies and television shows but also home videos that represent memories in action. It is also used to store depositions, which recorded testimonies in the court of law. It records other footages for documentation, such as scientific evidence during experiments or new procedures in the field of medicine.

For those who are already using the DVD format, the video tape may be converted into a digital format.
